The Guessing Strategy — When to Attempt

Expected Value Formula
EV = (P_correct × Marks) − (P_wrong × Penalty)
If EV > 0, attempting is mathematically beneficial
1/4 Penalty (JEE, NEET)
Attempt if confidence > 50%
1/3 Penalty (UPSC, SSC)
Attempt if confidence > 60%
Equal Penalty (−1 for +1)
Attempt if confidence > 75%

FAQ

How to calculate score with negative marking?
Formula: Score = (Correct × Marks per Correct) − (Wrong × Penalty). Example for JEE: 80 correct × 4 = 320, 20 wrong × 1 = 20, Score = 320 − 20 = 300.
Is there negative marking in UPSC?
Yes. In UPSC Prelims, each wrong answer deducts 1/3 of marks. For GS Paper I (2 marks each), 1 wrong = −0.66 marks. For Paper II CSAT (2.5 marks), 1 wrong = −0.83 marks.
What is 1/4 negative marking?
1/4 negative marking means you lose 1/4 of the question's marks for a wrong answer. In JEE Main, if correct = +4, then wrong = −1 (which is 1/4 of 4). In NEET, correct = +4, wrong = −1.
How do I minimize negative marking?
Attempt only when 60%+ confident (for 1/3 penalty) or 50%+ confident (for 1/4 penalty). Never guess randomly. Practice expected value thinking. Unattempted = 0 loss.
What is the minimum score to qualify?
Qualifying marks vary by exam: UPSC GS Paper II needs 66 out of 200, JEE Advanced qualifying cutoff varies by category and year. Use our exam presets to see how many correct answers you need.
