The Formula

Attendance Percentage Formula

The attendance percentage formula is universally used in all Indian schools, colleges, and universities:

Attendance Calculation Formula
Attendance % = (Classes Attended ÷ Total Classes Held) × 100
Classes Attended
Number of classes you were present
Total Classes Held
All classes conducted by professor
× 100
Converts ratio to percentage
Step by Step

How to Calculate Step by Step

Follow these 5 simple steps to calculate your attendance percentage manually:

1
Find Total Classes

Get the total number of classes scheduled by your professor. You can find this from your attendance register, faculty portal, or ERP system. Include all lectures, labs, and tutorials.

2
Count Your Attendances

Count how many of those classes you were physically present for. If your attendance was marked by proxy, that still counts. Check your student portal or attendance card.

3
Divide Attended ÷ Total

Divide your attended count by the total classes. Example: 60 ÷ 80 = 0.75. Keep the decimal for now — you will convert to percentage next.

4
Multiply by 100

Take the decimal result from step 3 and multiply by 100. Example: 0.75 × 100 = 75. This is your attendance percentage.

5
Compare with Requirement

Check if your percentage is at or above your university's minimum. Most Indian universities require 75%. If you are below, use our 75% calculator to find how many more classes to attend.

Examples

Worked Examples

Example 1: Student with 75% (Exact)

Ramesh attended 60 out of 80 classes.
Attendance = (60 ÷ 80) × 100 = 75.00%
Result: ✅ Exactly meets 75% requirement. Can skip 0 more classes.

Example 2: Student with 87.5% (Well above)

Priya attended 70 out of 80 classes.
Attendance = (70 ÷ 80) × 100 = 87.50%
Result: ✅ Comfortably above 75%. Can skip up to 10 more classes.

87.5%

Example 3: Student Below 75% (Danger)

Suresh attended 55 out of 80 classes.
Attendance = (55 ÷ 80) × 100 = 68.75%
Result: ❌ Below 75%. Needs to attend 5 more consecutive classes to reach 75%.

Excel / Google Sheets

Attendance Percentage in Excel

Here is how to calculate attendance percentage in Microsoft Excel or Google Sheets:

Basic Formula
=B2/A2*100

Where A2 = Total Classes, B2 = Classes Attended. Returns percentage as a number (e.g., 75).

Percentage Format
=B2/A2

Use this and format the cell as Percentage (Ctrl+Shift+5). Excel will show 75% automatically.

Check 75% Rule
=IF(B2/A2>=0.75,"Safe","Shortage")

Automatically shows "Safe" if attendance is 75% or above, otherwise "Shortage".

Count from Daily Log
=COUNTIF(C2:C100,"P")/COUNTA(C2:C100)*100

If your sheet has "P" for present and "A" for absent, this counts all presents automatically.

Average Attendance

How to Calculate Average Attendance of Students

To calculate the average attendance for a class or group of students:

Method 1: Average of Percentages
Average % = Sum of all student percentages ÷ Number of students
Method 2: Overall Ratio (More Accurate)
Average % = (Total attendances across all students ÷ Total possible attendances) × 100
Example: Class of 4 Students
StudentAttendedTotalIndividual %
Rahul728090%
Priya608075%
Amit568070%
Sneha448055%
Class Average232320 72.5% Warning

Method 2: (232 ÷ 320) × 100 = 72.5%

FAQ

How to Calculate Attendance — FAQ

Use the formula: (Classes Attended / Total Classes Held) × 100. For example: attended 60 out of 80 = (60/80)×100 = 75%.
Same as attendance percentage: (Days Present / Total Working Days) × 100. Both "attendance percentage" and "percentage of attendance" mean the same thing.
=B2/A2*100 where B2=attended and A2=total. Or use =B2/A2 and format the cell as Percentage (%).
Sum all attended counts and divide by sum of all total counts, then multiply by 100. This gives the weighted average, which is more accurate than averaging individual percentages.
(Days Present in Month / Total Working Days in Month) × 100. Exclude holidays and Sundays from both the numerator and denominator.
Add all subjects' attended classes together and divide by the sum of all total classes: Overall % = (ΣAttended / ΣTotal) × 100.
Multiply total classes by 0.75. Example: 0.75 × 80 = 60. So you must attend at least 60 classes out of 80. Always round UP using the ceiling function.
Same formula: (Days Present / Total School Days) × 100. Schools typically track daily attendance rather than class-wise.
